How Vaibhav Suryavanshi can “fast-track” his India debut by playing first class cricket

Ex-India coach Ravi Shastri has suggested that Vaibhav Suryavanshi should play first-class cricket to fast track his Team India debut

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri reckons Vaibhav Suryavanshi playing first-class cricket will fast-track his Team India (senior) debut. His remarks come after the 14-year-old smashed a 52-ball century, which also happens to be the fastest in Youth ODIs. Syuryavanshi’s stellar form from IPL 2025 has now spilt over to the India U19 series against England U19 as well.

Play first class, get India debut soon

Speaking on broadcast during Day 4 of ENG v IND 2nd Test, Shastri pointed out that although Suryavanshi may go on to play first-class cricket, it is the IPL which gives him a platform where the entire country’s eyes will be on him. He said that the 14-year-old playing a couple of seasons in first-class cricket and scoring some hundreds will surely fast-track his dream of making an India debut.

He will play First-Class cricket, but that’s what the IPL does. It gives you that platform. The whole country sees you. And you catch the imagination of everyone. It will fast-track him if he goes and plays First-Class cricket, goes and gets a couple of hundreds in his first couple of seasons,” Shastri said.

Suryavanshi took just 52 deliveries to get to the triple figure mark in the 4th youth ODI against England U19. His knock was studded with 14 fours and 10 sixes before he was sent packing by Ben Mayes. England won the toss and opted to bowl first in the contest. Vaibhav narrowly fell short of a well-deserved 150 as he was dismissed for 143 runs.

He has already caught the eyes; already made it to the Under-19 team at the age of 14. Smacking it everywhere. And it’s tours like this to England, with this exposure. He can only improve,” Shastri added.
