“His batting suits the format”: Harbhajan Singh baffled with Sanju Samson’s exclusion in Champions Trophy squad

Sanju Samson is currently in the Indian squad for the 5-match T20I series against England

One of the India Cricket Team stars who was not picked for the ICC Champions Trophy squad is Sanju Samson. Now former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has come out to question his exclusion from the team. Harbhajan has argued that Samson has a healthy average of 56 in ODIs and yet hasn’t got a chance in the team.

The BCCI Selection Committee has put their trust in KL Rahul as their number 1 keeper while Rishabh Pant remains the second-choice keeper in the tournament. However, despite his good form in ODIs, Sanju Samson has been conveniently avoided.

Harbhajan Singh questions Samson’s absence in ICT squad

“Truly, I feel bad for him. He scores runs but he is dropped. I know you can only select 15, but I feel his batting suits the format. He has an average of 55-56, but he isn’t even there as a second wicketkeeper. When we talk about selecting him, people ask, in whose place? Places can be made,” Harbhajan said.

Sanju Samson’s last ODI appearance for the Men in Blue came in December of 2023 against South Africa. Back in 2024, Samson was not picked for the Sri Lanka series as Rishabh Pant made his comeback into the 50-over format. On the other hand, Samson has a good average of 56 in ODIs, and thus his exclusion has baffled Harbhajan Singh.

Reports also claim that Samson was not picked for the ICC Champions Trophy as he was not a part of the Vijay Hazare Trophy squad for Kerala. The ace keeper was not picked as he didn’t join the pre-tournament camp organized by the KCA.

Currently, the player is with the India squad for the 5-match T20I series against England.
