Harshit Rana isn’t Kapil Dev, don’t build him up suddenly: Ex-India star says pacer not “ready product now”

Atul Wassan warned that it was not right to suddenly build-up Harshit Rana after just one match, noting that it puts additional pressure on the bowler

Former India cricketer Atul Wassan claimed that pacer Harshit Rana had all the potential to be the next Kapil Dev but was not a ready product yet. His remarks come after Rana’s poor performance in IND vs AUS 2nd Test where he conceded 86 runs in 16 overs without taking a wicket. Harshit Rana, who made his Test debut in IND vs AUS 1st Test in Perth, managed to retain his spot in the playing XI for the 2nd Test in Adelaide. However, India’s decision to stick with the pacer did not reap rewards.

“Harshit Rana not a ready product now”

Speaking to ANI following India’s loss, Atul Wassan warned that it was not right to suddenly build-up Harshit Rana after just one match, noting that it puts additional pressure on the bowler. The former cricketer said that the pacer will not be able to become better if there was no patience with him. He added that the hype around new bowlers who found their way into the side lasted only for a short while, going on to cite the cases of Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep and Khaleel Ahmed.

Look, the hindsight is a perfect vision. You get to everything later. In the 1st Test match, Harshit Rana played well. He took wickets, won you the match, and you are like this is amazing and that we have found another Kapil Dev. Suddenly people come over the top in India. He is a good bowler. I think he has the potential. But do not build him up suddenly so that he gets so much pressure. He will have bad days,” Atul Wassan said.

India skipper Rohit Sharma came to Harshit Rana’s defence following India’s 10-wicket loss in Adelaide. The Hitman reckoned that it was wrong to drop a player from the side just after one game, adding that youngsters needed to be supported by the seniors. Rohit said he believed that a player shouldn’t be taken off the side if they did not commit any mistake.

Rana didn’t do anything wrong in the first Test. He bowled well, got crucial breakthroughs, and I believe that players shouldn’t be let go if they haven’t done anything wrong, and nor should it be the case generally. If it happens, how will other members of the team feel secure? They will think ‘you give us one game but take us out of the other’. This is not good for any player or team,” Rohit Sharma said.
