Hardik Pandya to Shami: Indian cricketers who’ll play ODIs for first time since 2023 World Cup

All the mentioned players will participate in the IND vs ENG ODI series before going to UAE for the Champions Trophy 2025.

The BCCI recently announced Team India’s squad for the upcoming IND vs. ENG ODI series and ICC Champions Trophy. The ODI series has been organized to assist both teams in their preparation for the upcoming ICC event. India plans to experiment with their squad to find the optimal balance before the competition.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be the most significant ODI tournament since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Up to January 2025, India has played only six ODIs since the World Cup. Consequently, several Indian cricketers will be making their return to ODI cricket for the first time since the 2023 World Cup in the three-match ODI series against England.

Let’s take a look at three Indian cricketers who will return to ODI cricket for the first time since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Cricketers who will return to ODI cricket for the first time since World Cup 2023

Mohammed Shami

A major highlight of India’s ODI squad is the return of Mohammed Shami. Shami’s last appearance in ODI cricket was during the 2023 World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad. Unfortunately, he was sidelined for over a year due to an ankle injury. Shami has shown impressive performance in domestic matches leading up to the ODI series. He will be joining Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh in the fast bowling lineup.

Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja is set to make his return to ODI cricket following the heart-wrenching defeat in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final. During the tournament, he was instrumental, especially with his match-winning spell against South Africa in the group stage.

This time around, Jadeja faces strong competition from Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, who are also part of the squad. In a bold move, India has decided to select only three fast bowlers and will likely go with three spinners in the playing XI.

Hardik Pandya

Like Jadeja and Shami, Pandya’s last ODI match wasn’t the 50-over World Cup final in 2023. His last ODI game came against Bangladesh in Pune, where he injured his ankle and then was eventually ruled out of the tournament. Pandya has been named as India’s only fast-bowling all-rounder and is expected to play as the third seamer through the England ODI series and ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
