In a significant leadership transition, Mumbai Indians (MI) have appointed the dynamic all-rounder Hardik Pandya as the captain for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.

Hardik Pandya will succeed the illustrious Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians’ longest-serving and highly successful captain.

The announcement marks a strategic move for Mumbai Indians, known for its legacy-building and forward-thinking approach. Mahela Jayawardene, Global Head of Performance for Mumbai Indians, emphasized the team’s commitment to staying future-ready.

He stated, “Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership, right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who, while contributing to immediate success, have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season.”

Jayawardene welcomes Hardik Pandya as captain

Expressing gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership, Jayawardene acknowledged Sharma’s extraordinary tenure since 2013. Sharma’s captaincy not only brought unparalleled success to the team but also established him as one of the finest captains in IPL history. Despite stepping down as captain, Sharma’s guidance and experience are expected to contribute significantly to Mumbai Indians’ continued success.

Hardik Pandya, Captain Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, Piyush Chawla, Akash Madhwal, Nehal Wadhera, Kumar Kartikeya Singh, Vishnu Vinod, Shams Mulani and Arjun Tendulkar continue with Mumbai Indians for the 2024 season.

The  overseas contingent of Tim David, Dewald Brevis, Jason Behrendorff, Cameron Green continue with Mumbai Indians.
In the run up to the retention deadline, Mumbai Indians acquired Romario Shepherd via trade.

Mumbai Indians have released the following players
Jofra Archer, Tristan Stubbs, Duan Jansen, Jhye Richardson, Ramandeep Singh, Raghav Goyal, Arshad Khan and Hrithik Shokeen. 

The following players were also released as they came in as replacement players - Sandeep Warrier for Jasprit Bumrah; Chris Jordan for Jofra Archer; Riley Meredith for Jhye Richardson.
