The injury-hit India team lifted their second consecutive Border-Gavaskar Trophy by winning the Gabba Test. BCCI secretary Jay Shah took to twitter and praised the young team India for their stellar effort on beating Australia on their own backyard. Remembering the iconic day he wrote “#OnThisDay in 2021, the country witnessed one of the greatest comebacks ever in test cricket history. A stellar display of sheer belief and determination by the entire team led #TeamIndia to conquer the Australian Fortress, #Gabba after 32 long years. @BCCI”.

Ravi Shastri who was the coach of Team India back then in his message on Twitter lauded the efforts of Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur. He wrote “Shubman Gill laid the foundation. Mohammed Siraj got the breakthroughs and Rishabh Pant finished it. Add Washington Sundar and Washington Sundar to the list. Their contribution was immense in the series win,”. Shastri also hoped that the wicketkeeper-batter Pant returns to India’s Test team soon as the side will host the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in February.

Greatest Test Win: Highlights of Team India’s victory over Australia at Gabba

Australia batting first posted 369 runs in their first innings with  Marnus Labuschagne scoring a century . The Australian bowlers bowled well to reduce India to 186-6 only for  Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar to do the rescue act for Team India. The duo stitched together a 123-run partnership for the seventh wicket as a result of which India ended just 33 runs behind Australia’s total.

The young Indian side went toe to toe against Australia with Mohammed Siraj bowling brilliantly in the second innings. The pacer bagged his maiden five-wicket haul, and was supported by Thakur who picked up four wickets.  Australia were bowled out for 294, leaving India 328 to chase.

The visitors did not have the best of the start with Rohit Sharma getting dismissed early. Cheteshwar Pujara held his ground and stitched  a crucial 114-run partnership for the second wicket with Shubman Gill keeping India in the match. Australia crawled their way into the match with help of wickets but Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten 89 runs helped India cross the finish line with three-wickets to spare. The loss also meant Australia’s dominant 32-year unbeaten streak at the Gabba also ended.
