Goodbye Ishan Kishan? No place in IND vs ENG T20Is means end of the road for out-of-favour star

Ishan Kishan failed to find a spot in IND vs ENG T20I squad, his best chance of making a comeback to the national team after being on the sidelines since November 2023

It looks like Ishan Kishan‘s dreams of making a comeback to India cricket team is all but over. The out-of-favour keeper-batter was left out of the squad for IND vs ENG T20I series, extending his stay on the sidelines. Despite playing regularly in domestic cricket, as he was directed to in order to fancy a chance of returning to the Indian squad, the southpaw has failed to deliver as per expectations and was probably left out hence.

End of road for Ishan Kishan’s comeback dreams?

Kishan’s performance in both Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was sub-par. In the domestic T20 tournament, he managed to score just 161 runs in six matches while he amassed 316 runs in 7 matches in the List A tournament. His only chance of securing a spot in the Indian team was in the T20I side. But given his performance in the shortest format, it is apt that he has been excluded. Instead, the selectors have opted to stick with Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel for IND vs ENG T20I series.

In ODIs, Kishan stands no chance of making it to the squad, given that India have two first-choice keepers in the form of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. As for Tests, there is literally no scope for Kishan whatsoever. Therefore, being left out from the T20I squad could signal the end of the road for the Jharkhand star.

Kishan played his last international game in November 2023. He lost his BCCI central contract after failing to play domestic cricket (Ranji Trophy) despite being asked to do so by the BCCI in 2024. While he participated in IPL 2024, he was left out of the squads that were picked for T20 World Cup and the subsequent series against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South Africa. Instead, he opted to play the Buchi Babu Tournament, Duleep Trophy, Ranji Trophy, SMAT and VHT. However, he failed to fire in most of the tournaments, denting his chances of making an India comeback. With the selectors preferring Samson, Rahul, Pant and Jurel over Kishan, the latter’s dreams of returning in Indian jersey colours is all but over.
