Gavaskar threatens legal action after website makes false Rohit Sharma captaincy removal claims

Rohit is expected to land in Australia soon after missing the first Test due to the birth of his second child.

Sunil Gavaskar has threatened to take action against a website that claimed that the legendary cricketers wanted Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli in the leadership role even after captain Rohit Sharma joined the side. Gavaskar had praised both Bumrah and Kohli after Team India managed to reduce Australia to 67/6 at the end of the first day’s play in Perth.

Bumrah-Kohli partnership in Perth

Having been reduced to just 150 themselves, Bumrah led from the front, taking a 5-wicket haul. However, it looked like Kohli was the captain when India took the field. The former skipper was constantly talking to Bumrah and was even seen changing the field on his own. Indian players were also looking at Kohli for instructions in the field rather than Bumrah on several occasions.

The website (Cricket Ception) shared an article of theirs on X (formerly Twitter), which claimed to be written by Gavaskar himself. It claimed that “Bumrah’s captaincy and Kohli’s leadership must continue as India dominates Perth; Rohit’s return shouldn’t mean a leadership shift.”

Rohit Sharma shouldn’t be India captain in Australia?

Naturally, it gained some traction online. However, as it turns out it was fake. Gavaskar had said no such thing. The website shared an attachment below of a clip where Gavaskar stated that he feels if Rohit Sharma isn’t the captain for the first Test, he shouldn’t lead in the remaining four India vs Australia matches.

However, that was a thing of the past. Gavaskar had said that himself on Sports Tak and backed it. But these claims that Bumrah-Kohli should take over aren’t what he’d suggested back then or now. That online post of the article can still be seen, but now the article can’t be opened.
