From ‘Selfish Babar’ to ‘King is back’, social media divided as PCB reappoints Babar Azam as Pakistan captain in ODIs, T20Is

While some users took to X to express their joy at the news, others shared funny memes to explain the situation.

Pakistan batter Babar Azam on Sunday was reappointed as Pakistan’s next captain in white-ball formats after being axed from the role just 5 months ago. Babar, who will take over the reigns from Shaheen Afridi, is set to lead Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2024. The announcement from PCB came amidst a lot of interest about the matter. Fans took to social media to express their opinion about the matter.

“Following unanimous recommendation from the PCB’s selection committee, Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi has appointed Babar Azam as white-ball (ODI and T20I) captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team,” a statement from PCB read.

Shaheen Afridi had a short and poor stint as the Pakistan captain. The fast bowler led the team in just 5 T20Is since becoming the captain. He lost four of them. Moreover, a disappointing PSL campaign saw more pressure being built on the fast bowler.

There were mixed reactions on social media after the appointment of Babar Azam as Pakistan’s white ball captain was made official. While some users took to X to express their joy, sharing posts such as ‘The king is back’, others shared funny memes to explain the situation. Here’s how the social media reacted.
