The IPL 2024 is far away but the teams have begun preparing for the new season. The first head coach change comes at Lucknow Super Giants with Andy Flower officially leaving his role. LSG has since recruited former Australia coach Justin Langer to the role. The change was confirmed by the franchise officially on Friday.
“Dear Andy, Today it’s farewell, but it’ll never be goodbye because you’ll always be one of our own. Thank you for everything! ,” the franchise wrote in the Twitter post.
Flower worked with Punjab Kings as an assistant coach for two seasons before joining LSG in 2021. He led Lucknow to back-to-back third-place finishes in the Indian Premier League in 2022 and 2023. The former Zimbabwe captain had a strong relationship with KL Rahul, who he coached at Punjab Kings before LSG.
Flower collaborated closely with the Super Giants’ director of cricket, Gautam Gambhir. He had a successful tenure with the team, finishing in the playoffs in both of their previous seasons. Gambhir will now have Langer for company as they aim to bag the title in IPL 2024. Reports have suggested Gambhir might also be on his way out, but that is unlikely to be the case.
Gambhir has a special bond with Langer, having travelled to Perth to get his advice during his playing days. Langer himself comes in with a wealth of experience, winning 3 Big Bash titles with Perth Scorchers.
