Fazalhaq Farooqi does a Ashwin in AFG vs PAK, runs out Shadab Khan at non-striker’s end

Afghanistan's Fazalhaq Farooqi's 'mankading' of Shadab Khan sparks controversy, altering game dynamics in a thrilling Afghanistan-Pakistan clash.

In a highly intense ending to the second match of a three-game series between Afghanistan and Pakistan, held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, a major controversy unfolded. Afghan bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi used the ‘mankading’ technique to dismiss Pakistan’s all-rounder, Shadab Khan, resulting in a dramatic turn of events during the nail-biting encounter.

Shadab, who had been playing aggressively and scored a crucial 48 runs off 35 balls, fell victim to Farooqi’s quick thinking. The situation was tense, with Pakistan needing 11 runs from the last over. The incident took place on the first ball of the final over when Farooqi, before releasing the ball, dislodged the bails as Shadab had moved out of his crease in anticipation of a run.

The unexpected and swift action by Fazalhaq Farooqi left Shadab visibly surprised, and the crowd’s reactions were mixed. This incident overshadowed the thrilling conclusion that the match was building up to. Opinions varied on whether Farooqi’s move was in line with the fair play spirit of the game or if it went against the unspoken code of conduct.

Shadab’s dismissal by Fazalhaq Farooqi placed Pakistan in a precarious position, but a remarkable performance by young fast bowler Naseem Shah turned the tide. Naseem displayed composure, launching a counterattack that secured Pakistan’s victory by a single wicket. His boundary off the second-to-last ball not only sealed the win but also clinched the series 2-0 for Pakistan.

Earlier in the match, Afghanistan had showcased their batting prowess by setting a competitive target of 300/5. Rahmaullah Gurbaz’s outstanding score of 151 and Ibrahim Zadra’s 80 were pivotal in establishing the challenging target.

Afghanistan’s spirited revival in the second match, following a disappointing showing in the initial ODI where they were bowled out for a mere 59, surely provided them with a confidence boost ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. As both teams prepare for the highly anticipated Asia Cup starting on August 30, this series filled with standout moments, controversies, and a rekindled rivalry adds excitement and anticipation for the upcoming tournament.
