EXCLUSIVE | “I’ll put Virat Kohli ahead of Ab de Villiers”: Daryll Cullinan explains why King is a better captain

In an exclusive interview with InsideSport, Daryll Cullinan explains why he rates Virat Kohli as a better captain over South Africa's Ab de Villiers

Former South AfrIcan cricketer Daryll Cullinan admitted that he was a huge fan of Virat Kohli and rated him as a better captain in comparsion with Ab de Villiers. Speaking to Insidesport exclusively on the sidelines of Big Cricket League, the Northern Challengers coach pointed out that Indian fans were sometimes very critical about their superstars, referring to some harsh criticism faced by the former skipper for some “heat of the moment” incidents on field during Kohi’s reign as the skipper. Virat had stepped down as the Test skipper in 2022 following which Rohit Sharma took over the reins of the team.

Why Cullinan rates skipper Virat Kohli above Ab de Villiers?

Speaking to Insidesport, Daryll Cullinan revealed that he admired Virat Kohli over Ab de Villiers as captain simply because the former had taken on the challenges and criticism directed at him. He justified his claim by stating that the Indian batting maestro as the Indian captain was taking all the responsibilty on him – both as captain and as a star batter. He said that he would rate Virat Kohli’s captaincy above de Villiers’ because Kohli’s attitude signified that the opposition had to go through him in order to beat the team.

I think the world has enjoyed Virat Kohli’s cricket. He’s been a top performer. I’ll tell you why I admire his cricket. He has taken it on. And if I look at Ab de Villiers, the difference to me of that era, I would put Virat ahead of ABD, because Virat’s attitude was ‘I’m the captain, I’m India, I’m no.3, I’ll win the game, and you get through me to win the game‘,” Cullinan said.
