Joe Root resumed his innings on 163* on Day 4 of the ENG vs NZ 2nd Test, and instantly took the attack to the Kiwi pacers. Tim Southee bore the brunt of some exquisite shot-making, as the former England reverse scooped him over the slips for a maximum.

Known for his classical cover drives and his traditional sweeps, Root brought out his T20 instincts to maximise results, in a shot that stunned the viewers around the globe. The six reminded many of Rishabh Pant, who had similarly played a reverse sweep off James Anderson for a six in India last year.

Root eventually did not last long and was dismissed for a stunning 176 helping England close down on Nee Zealand’s 553. The 31-year-old’s innings was already staggering in many aspects, having gone past the great Sunil Gavaskar in the all-time run scorers charts. Root also equalled the record for most centuries by an active cricketer, joining Virat Kohli and Steve Smith at 27 each.
