Welcome to our special segment, DRS or the Daily Review System. In this, InsideSport will provide you with the top cricket stories from a day before that you might have missed in the hustle and bustle of your busy life.

In what could be a massive rejig, Shreyas Iyer is all set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain. This comes ahead of the tour to Ireland and England, and after a sub-par performance by the latter in IPL 2026. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan, while Rohit Sharma is also unlikely to be a part of the series. Ruturaj Gaikwad is expected to replace Kohli in the ODI squad, while Rajat Patidar is reportedly set to replace Ruturaj in the India A squad for the tri-series. On that note, let’s take a look at the top headlines from Thursday.

It has been confirmed that Suryakumar Yadav has been sacked as the T20I captain. This comes just after the conclusion of IPL 2026, where the batter recorded a poor performance. No Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli for AFG ODIs

While Virat Kohli is confirmed to miss the ODI series against Afghanistan due to a hamstring injury, Rohit Sharma is also set to reportedly miss the series. Both stalwarts, who are active only in the 50-over format of the game, and have been India’s leading run-getters in ODIs since the Champions Trophy 2025, are expected to return to action in the series against England. While there was no news on Virat’s availability earlier, a Sharma’s availability for the series against AFG depended on if he will get a clearance from the BCCI’s CoE ahead of the tournament, which he has failed to do so thus far. Gaikwad to replace Kohli?

Gaikwad is expected to be picked as Virat’s replacement for the three-match IND vs AFG ODI series that commences from June 14. The report claims that Kohli has been advised rest for two weeks and that although he might be fit in time for the 3rd ODI, he is unlikely to be considered for selection. It is pertinent to point out that Ruturaj was added to the India A squad for the tri-series in Sri Lanka last week, replacing Riyan Parag. However, should Rutu be added to the ODI setup, then Rajat Patidar will be the one to replace him in the India A side, as per the report. Read more here.

Gambhir’s advice to Rishabh Pant

India cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir was involved in a conversation with Rishabh Pant after the latter was stripped off vice-captaincy of the Test team ahead of the one-off game against Afghanistan. Pant, who was named as Shubman Gill’s deputy last year after the latter took over the reins from Rohit Sharma, was removed as the vice-captain after faring poorly in the series against England, and South Africa in 2025. As per reports, Gambhir has had a conversation with Pant as to how he must conduct himself as a senior in the one-off Test against AFG. Read more here.

England’s Gay flops

There seems to be no end to England cricket team’s opening woes when it comes to the longest format of the game. After the prolonged failure of Zak Crawley at the top of the order, England decided to give domestic performer Emilio Gay a chance in the ENG vs NZ 1st Test at Lord’s. However, the new opener lasted for just 14 deliveries on his debut for England as he was sent packing by Kyle Jamieson. Read more here.

Cummins reaffirms international cricket promise

Just a day after hinting that IPL 2027 could be the sacrifice required to protect his body ahead of a packed international calendar, Pat Cummins has revealed a more ambitious goal. Australia’s Test and ODI captain now hopes to feature in every Test match over what could be the busiest 12-month period in the country’s cricket history. Cummins had earlier admitted that “something has got to give” in 2027 and made it clear that neither Test cricket nor the ODI World Cup would be compromised. Read more here.
