“Didn’t pick up call..” – Ricky Ponting suggests Shreyas Iyer not finalised as captain

IPL 2025 Auction: Shreyas Iyer was a surprise package as he was bagged by PBKS for a staggering 26.75 Cr.

PBKS made history at the IPL Auction 2025 by bagging Shreyas Iyer for a massive 26.75 Cr. That price meant, the ex-KKR skipper is now the second most expensive player in the history of IPL, behind Rishabh Pant. Punjab went into the IPL Auction with just two retentions — Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh — and added Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh to their roster.

Shreyas Iyer as PBKS Captain?

But if PBKS coach Ricky Ponting is to be believed, then Shreyas Iyer is not yet finalised as the team skipper as yet. That might be done, sooner rather than later, but then, it could not be, because of a funny reason. Punter revealed during a PC, that Shreyas was called to discuss captaincy, but the latter did not respond.

“I haven’t spoken to him (Shreyas Iyer about captaincy) yet, I tried to call him before the auction but he didn’t pick up. He’s been a successful captain in IPL before, I worked with him 3-4 years in Delhi and he was the championship winner last season. I’m delighted to work with him again, if he can do that for us in the IPL I’ll be pretty happy,” Ponting said at the PC.
