Chennai Super Kings pacer Matheesha Pathirana has dubbed former captain MS Dhoni as his “cricketing father.” The Sri Lankan pacer made his IPL debut in 2022 and has been taken under the wings of “Thala” ever since then. He has seen a meteoric rise not just in the IPL but also in the Sri Lankan national team as well.
Pathirana heaps praise on CSK mentor Dhoni
In a video uploaded by CSK on social media platforms, an emotional Pathirana and his parents describe the kind of support the young pacer received from Dhoni in IPL.
“Dhoni is like my father because of the support, mentorship and guidance he gave me in CSK. So, it is very similar to what my father did at home,” Pathirana said.
Ever since making his debut for CSK, Pathirana has gone to become the team’s pace spearhead. He is now Gaikwad’s go-to bowler in terms if getting wickets, especially in the death overs.

After missing CSK’s IPL 2025 opener against MI, Pathirana has been consistent in the other two games. He finished with figures of 2/26 and 2/38 in the games against RCB and RR respectively. The Sri Lankan pacer was retained for a sum of Rs 13 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
