Days after Rohit Sharma’s Test retirement, Manjrekar says, “164 in his last 15 innings”

Rohit Sharma stunned Indian cricket fans with his unexpected Test retirement, with the England Test series approaching.

A few days after Rohit Sharma announced his Test retirement, former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has highlighted his struggles in the format. For the record, the 38-year-old scored 4301 runs in 67 Tests at an average of 40.58. On the other hand, as an opener he scored 2697 runs at an average of 42.80 in 38 Tests.

Sanjay Manjrekar Taunts Rohit Sharma?

Manjrekar took to X, and wrote, “164 in his last 15 innings. Out of which 10 were at home v Bangladesh & NZ. Average 10.9. With his current fitness levels…Rohit Sharma’s days as Test opener were over. So…”

Having said that, Rohit’s retirement comes as a bolt from the blue. With the five Test series coming up vs England on June 20, the team would have wanted one of their senior-most players to be around. In fact, a couple of months back, there were reports that he would continue as the skipper for the tour.

Who Would be India’s Test Captain?

Now, with this decision, it remains to be seen, as to who becomes the skipper for the tour and the Test side. Various reports claim that Shubman Gill is the front-runner to be the skipper, while Rishabh Pant could be in the race too. As for openers, there is the choice of Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Abhimanyu Easwaran and perhaps new entrant, Sai Sudharsan.
