The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been handed another blow as first-choice pacer Khaleel Ahmed has been ruled out of IPL 2026. The left-arm fast bowler has endured a right quadricep injury, with him needing to take 10 to 12 weeks off.
The injury happened during their recent win over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Khaleel pulled up midway through his spell, clutching his quad and clearly in discomfort. He couldn’t complete his final delivery, with Gurjapneet Singh stepping in to finish the over. It didn’t look great in the moment, and the assessment since has confirmed the worst. A Grade 2 tear that ends his campaign.
CSK frustrated with injuries
This isn’t an isolated problem for CSK. Their injury list is starting to pile up. Nathan Ellis is already out with a hamstring issue. His replacement, Spencer Johnson, hasn’t even joined the squad yet after reportedly picking up a back stress injury. Now with Khaleel gone, the bowling unit suddenly looks thin.
There’s uncertainty around MS Dhoni as well. He has been dealing with a calf strain since before the season and, while he has resumed light batting, he is still not match-fit. There’s clarity that he will not travel with the squad for the upcoming game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that the franchise will take a call on Khaleel’s replacement after discussions with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Stephen Fleming.

Who will replace Khaleel Ahmed in CSK’s XI?
Khaleel may not have lit up the IPL 2026 so far, but his presence will be missed. He is adept in taking early blows, like he did in the CSK vs RCB clash, rushing Virat Kohli with extra bounce that he generates from his height.
Now, CSK will have to turn to Matt Henry. Yes, Henry hasn’t delivered at all in the chances he got but the New Zealander is genuinely one of the best new-ball pacers across the globe. Just like Khaleel, he can extract bounce and seam off the deck. Meanwhile, Anshul Kamboj, who is predominantly a swing bowler, will also get more chances to bowl in the powerplay. However, including Henry will mean CSK can’t include Akeal Hosein due to the four overseas players rule.
Instead, to accommodate Akeal’s left-arm spin, CSK can instead include Prashant Veer, whom they signed for a whopping INR 14.20 crore. He has 12 wickets acorss 11 at an incredible economy of 6.45. However, he hasn’t got enough opportunity to bowl at CSK. It is only a matter of time when CSK throw their uncapped investments in the high-pressure cauldron that is the IPL.
