IPL 2023: Ireland Squad Bangladesh ODI – Gujarat Titans (GT) fans have some bad news. Irish pacer Joshua Little will miss at least three games from May May 8 to 14. Little has been named in Ireland’s 14-member ODI squad for the Bangladesh series. Ireland are in a must-win situation to avoid playing in World Cup qualifier in Zimbabwe in July. In fact, Ireland have to win 3-0 against a stronger Bangladesh side. IRE vs BAN ODI series is the last round of ICC World Cup Super League games. It starts on May 9 in England. With Ireland in such a situation, they have called up Joshua Little for the three-match series. Little is the only Irish player in IPL and has played four matches, taking 3 wickets. However, he did not feature in GT’s loss to Rajasthan Royals. Instead, GT handed Afghan spinner Noor Mohammad his IPL debut. Gujarat Titans are 4th on IPL 2023 Points Table with 3 wins in 5 games.

GT’s hope of Little’s returns to the Big league

“We wish Josh the best as he heads back to represent Ireland in the ODIs. He has had a good run in his first Tata Indian Premier League and we look forward to welcoming him back once he finishes the ODI series,” said Vikram Solanki, Director of Cricket, Gujarat Titans.

Andrew White on Little’s return from IPL

“We are pleased to also have the services of Josh Little, who has been playing in the IPL over the last month. After a tough tour to Bangladesh last month, the lads will be keen to show their talent and skills in more familiar conditions – and with potential world cup qualification on the line, they will need no additional motivation to succeed,” Andrew White, National Men’s Selector said.

“The three-match ODI series between Ireland Men and Bangladesh Men are the last fixtures in the ICC World Cup Super League. It offers Ireland a potential automatic qualification spot in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 if the Men in Green can win all three matches. Bangladesh have already qualified for the global tournament,” Ireland Cricket said in a release.

However, instead of Ireland, the matches will be held in Chelmsford, England on May 9, 12 and 14 respectively. Thus, Little will have to depart for England at least on May 7 to join the squad in Chelmsford.

Matches Josh Little will miss for GT:

  • May 7: Gujarat Titans vs Lucknow Super Giants
  • May 12: Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Titans
  • May 15: Gujarat Titans vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

However, it’s still unsure whether Little will return to IPL for GT’s last league match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 21. Ireland will play a Test against England starting June 1. If GT don’t qualify, it is likely that Joshua Little will stay back home instead of travelling back to India.

Ireland are 11th in the standings with 68 points and may catch South Africa (98 points). To clinch a direct qualification berth for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, the hosts must improve their net run rate and avoid dropping penalty points.

Craig Young is back in the 14-member squad after a long injury layoff. The 32-year-old seamer was ruled out of the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup due to a recurring injury issue but returns in time for the crucial ODI series.

Conor Olphert, Matthew Humphreys and Ross Adair will be unavailable due to examination/work commitments.

“The senior squad has a more familiar look, with much of the squad having been part of the set-up in Zimbabwe (January) and Bangladesh (March) ODI fixtures. We do, however, welcome Craig Young back into the senior side after his long journey of recovery from injury,” Andrew White said in an official statement released by Ireland Cricket.

Ireland Squad Bangaldesh ODI: Andrew Balbirnie (captain), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Stephen Doheny, Fionn Hand, Graham Hume, Josh Little, Andy McBrine, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker and Craig Young.
