“Ireland tour is where we can experiment with the squad. Before facing Australia at home, we need to give the lads who are performing in IPL a chance. Tilak definitely features big time in future planning. He is one of the emerging players selectors have a tab on. If he is fit, he definitely has a chance,” a BCCI source told InsideSport.

Not just IPL though, Tilak Varma also delivered some good performances in Vijay Hazare Trophy. In seven matches, the 20-year-old scored 402 runs for Hyderabad at an average of 80.40 with 2 centuries and a fifty. He also scored at a high strike rate of 118.23.

While Sanju Samson is a sure-shot starter in IPL with a new central contract, selectors are open to experimentation in other positions. With Virat Kohli set for workload management due to ICC World Cup, a spot be open to competition. Furthermore, Suryakumar Yadav is also set workload management with Shreyas Iyer’s return yet to be determined. Hence, the likes of Rahul Tripathi, Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan will compete for a spot.

“It was gripping. So we thought that we just play the spinners and go for the fast bowlers. I love playing over the covers. I was just waiting for that. It came off the middle of the bat, I enjoyed it. I just want to finish games for MI. That’s what I am thinking. Whenever I go out to bat, whatever the situation is, I just think about helping the team. It’s going well and I am happy right now,” Tilak Varma said of his knock against SRH.
