Can Shreyas Iyer earn his way back to Test squad for IND vs ENG series with Ranji Trophy heroics?

Given his consistent performances in domestic cricket, Shreyas Iyer has high chances of returning to the Test squad for IND vs ENG series

Shreyas Iyer stands a good chance of making a comeback to India cricket team’s Test side in the IND vs ENG series in June 2025. Ever since being snubbed from the BCCI’s Central Contracts list in 2024, the middle-order batter has been left out of the red-ball format squad. However, he has made it up with consistent performances in first-class cricket. While he has returned to the ODI setup, it is only about time that he finds his way back to the Test side.

Iyer last played in a Test in the IND vs ENG 2nd Test in Vishakhapatnam in February 2024. He was then subjected to a snub from the central contracts list that saw him lose his place in the Test side. However, the Mumbai batter made it up by abiding by the BCCI’s directive to take part in domestic tournaments and did so consistently. From the Duleep Trophy to the Irani Cup to the second leg of Ranji Trophy, Shreyas has been consistent with the bat.

In Ranji Trophy 2024-25, Iyer amassed 480 runs from five matches, including two centuries. Besides the fact that he found his golden touch again, he also managed to effectively find a solution for his problems with the short ball. This was very much visible not just in his domestic matches but also in the recently concluded IND vs ENG ODI series where he impressed with a couple of half-centuries.

Riding on his fine form off-late, Shreyas stands a good chance of making his comeback to the Indian Test team. This of course depends on the vacancy available in the team. If reports of Rohit Sharma being unlikely to be picked in the Test team once again are true, then Iyer stands a chance to return to the srtup. But his depends on multiple factors, including coach Gambhir’s belief in maintaing a fine left-right balance and the batting position of KL Rahul. Traditionally, Shreyas has batted the most at the number 6 position in Tests and has 492 runs to his name while batting at that position.
