David Warner: While Australia will play their next Test series against Pakistan after World Cup 2023, David Warner might not be in starting XI. The Southpaw did not have the best of Ashes 2023 as he scored only 285 runs. With Cameron Bancroft, Matt Renshaw, and Marcus Harris knocking on the doors of selection, time is running for the experienced opener Warner.
“With Harris the spare batter over in the UK, with Renshaw being over there as well and the runs Cameron has scored in the last 12 months, I think all three have put themselves probably at the head of the queue for the vacant spot we know is coming,” Adam Voges said to Cricket.com.au.
Not only Ashes, but the 36-year-old also had a mediocre Border Gavaskar Trophy preceding the Ashes, failing to score a single fifty in three Test matches. Age is also not helping Warner’s cause as he is on the wrong side of his thirties. While the southpaw wishes to play home Tests against Pakistan during Summer in Australia in 2023, it now looks like a far-fetched thought as the Aussie opener is not among the runs.

David Warner: Bancroft, Renshaw & Harris in line to make comeback as Warner’s time is running out
For the uninitiated, Renshaw was part of the India tour, the southpaw played in two matches but failed to get going scoring just 0, 2, 2 in three innings. However, two of the knocks came as non-opener, which is traditionally not Renshaw’s preferred spot. Speaking about Bancroft and Harris, the duo are plundering a lot of run in Sheffield Sheild. Bancroft was the leading run-getter for Western Australia last season.
Bancroft last played a Test match against England in the 2019 Ashes. Since then, the right-hand batter has molded his game well and has gained experience by playing County Cricket.
Harris also went back to the drawing board after being dropped during Ashes 2022 series. The southpaw pressing a case for a comeback by consistently playing well in domestic tournaments. All three are in contention to replace Warner in the first Test match against Pakistan on December 14.
National selector George Bailey said of Harris in April: “Looking ahead, back in England, another home summer and then some Tests in New Zealand, we certainly rate Harry’s ability in those conditions. Certainly one of our criteria when we’re doing the contracts is past performance, but certainly another one is an eye to the future as well. So that perhaps gives an indication of where we hold Harry.”
With Australia playing no Test matches until the Pakistan series, Warner’s only way of retaining his spot is to score heavy runs in the upcoming Sheffield Shield.
