Break proves disastrous for Rohit Sharma, MI star falls cheaply at Wankhede vs DC

Rohit Sharma fell cheaply in the must win MI vs DC game at the Wankhede after returning to IPL 2025 after a forced break.

Rohit Sharma now has a stand named after him at the Wankhede, but the Mumbai Indians ace did not enjoy a happy homecoming in the MI vs DC clash on Wednesday. Batting first in front of a crowd wearing tribute shirts, Rohit failed to make a mark. The 37-year-old’s struggles against left-arm pace are well documented, and Rohit once again fell victim to his nemesis Mustafizur Rahman.

Rohit Sharma’s Wankhede return falls flat

Rohit Sharma was honoured earlier this week with the Mumbai Cricket Association naming a stand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. The five-time champions also distributed special jerseys among the fans to mark Rohit’s return. However, the 37-year-old failed to make an impact.

The Hit-Man scored a boundary to get going, but his innings did not last long. Facing nemesis Mustafizur Rahman, the ex-MI skipper edged it to Abhishek Porel. Rohit has had an up-and-down season, and a forced IPL 2025 break was hoped at rejuvenating the 37-year-old.

The MI vs DC game was Rohit’s first professional game at Wankhede since the stand’s unveiling. While it did not turn out to be as fruitful, MI would hope to cap the occasion off with a win. in 12 IPL 2025 games, Rohit has 305 runs, striking at 150.99. He’s the 3rd highest run-getter for Mumbai Indians this season. The five-time champions are in the running for the playoffs, needing to defeat Delhi Capitals at home.

Rohit Sharma’s special jersey

The five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) unveiled a special Rohit Sharma jersey on Wednesday. The front proudly displays the phrase “Mumbai Cha Raja” in Marathi, which translates to “King of Mumbai”, celebrating Rohit Sharma’s immense contribution to the franchise. His name and jersey number are printed on the back, making it a collector’s item for fans. It was also Rohit’s first game after retiring from Tests. Fans marked the occasion by wearing Test jerseys, with a spots of white in the sea of blue at Wankhede.
