The Big Bash League 2024 opener was played between Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars at the Optus Stadium in Perth on December 15 (Sunday). The Big Bash League 2024 opener was won by the home side as they completed an easy yet tricky chase. Chasing a target of 147 set by the Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers were 37/3 in 4.5 overs as skipper Ashton Turner (37* runs) and Cooper Connolly (64 runs) played valuable knocks to seal the game for Perth.

Earlier in the day, Melbourne Stars won the bat flip and opted to bat first. Jason Behrendorff started the BBL 2024 edition with a maiden. Jhye Richardson then removed Joe Clarke for a duck in the second over.
Richardson also trapped Sam Harper in the next over, leaving the Stars reeling at 2/3 after 3.2 overs. Tom Rogers and Marcus Stoinis tried to steady the ship with a 30-run stand, but as the former went to play a reverse off Cooper Connolly, he perished.
Stoinis and Hilton Cartwright then added 35 runs for the 4th wicket before a brilliant piece of fielding from AJ Tye caught the Melbourne Stars skipper short of his ground at the non-striker’s end in the first over of Power Surge. The biggest partnership of the innings came for the 6th wickets between Tom Curran and Beau Webster. They stitched a 44-run stand and helped the Stars go past the 140-run mark.
