The BCCI Apex Council Meeting are undecided on the participation of retired players in overseas leagues. A decision on a cooling-off period was expected to be taken at the meeting but has been left in the hands of Jay Shah and Roger Binny. Former India stars Robin Uthappa, Yusuf Pathan have played in the ILT20 while Ambati Rayudu gears up for the maiden MLC 2023 season.

Several former cricketers have called for Indian players to be allowed in foreign leagues. The BCCI however remains adamant about holding onto their domestic talent. The cooling-off period thus discourages Indian players from participating in overseas leagues. BCCI is unwilling to offer any respite to players wanting to play overseas.

BCCI is worried that such a move sets a dangerous precedent. At present, there is no policy on retired players playing overseas. The board will discuss making one at the Apex Council Meeting. As earlier reported, players might have to undergo a one-year cooling period. Should they want to feature in Indian cricket in any capacity, obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the board will become mandatory.

The decision has been left to BCCI President Roger Binny and Secretary Jay Shah. It is clear that the Indian board want to regulate the player influx. Given that majority of teams in SA20, ILT20 and MLC are IPL-backed, BCCI is not happy with the situation. There is a view within the Indian board that surplus IPL funds are being diverted towards other leagues thus helping other boards generate more income.
