BCCI to hike Test match fees? Decision soon with players opting to focus on IPL: Report

A few days back, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had made it clear that centrally contracted players will have to play Ranji Trophy.

In a bid to avoid a situation where the players are keeping themselves away from red-ball cricket, to play in the IPL, the BCCI is considering hiking the match fees for the Tests, as per a report in the Indian Express. The decision might have come after wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan ignoring the management’s call to play in the Ranji Trophy.

Instead, it is believed, that he will play in the DY Patil T20 Cup 2024, in order to prepare for the IPL 2024. Another reason could be, how events unfolded with Shreyas Iyer, who opted out of the IND vs ENG Test series, after the second match in Vizag, citing stiffness in back, and groin pain.

How it Could be Done

A source in the BCCI explained, “For example, if someone plays all Test series in a calendar year, he should be rewarded additionally, apart from the annual retainer contract. This is to ensure that players turn out for more red-ball cricket. This would be an additional perk for playing Test cricket.”

The report further adds, if the model is eventually approved, it could be brought in place after the IPL this year. The exact amount of the bonus is still being decided though. As of now, the BCCI pays INR 15 lakh for a Test, INR 6 lakh for an ODI, and INR 3 lakh for a T20I.
