BCCI not worried about Jasprit Bumrah’s injury, pacer will play ‘big games’ in Champions Trophy: Report

Bumrah had injured his back after bowling more than 150 overs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

What every Indian cricket fan wanted to hear: Jasprit Bumrah will play in the ICC Champions Trophy. The pacer’s luck hasn’t been good when it comes to injury and fitness for ICC tournaments. Bumrah has already missed three major events: the 2023 World Test Championship Final and the 2021-2022 T20 World Cups. But that won’t be the case this time.

Bumrah had injured his back in Sydney in early January and has been out since. He was initially supposed to play in the India vs. England 3rd ODI, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ruled him out of that fixture. The unorthodox pacer was named in India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, but reports had previously suggested that he won’t take part in the group stage matches against Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand.

Jasprit Bumrah will be fit for the ICC Champions Trophy

The results of his scans were to come soon. Team India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, revealed yesterday (February 8) in Cuttack that the results for the scans weren’t in yet. But it seems like they are. And Bumrah is virtually confirmed to play in the ‘big games’ of the tournament. This would suggest that his first game of the event would be the semifinal if Team India qualifies for the knockout matches. But he might be fit to play before.

“Bumrah will be closely monitored, and he should be ready for big games in the Champions Trophy,” a BCCI official told CricBlogger.

BCCI doesn’t want to overuse Bumrah

Since regaining full fitness in mid-2023, Bumrah has been playing nonstop. At some point, his body had to give. That happened in the last match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With little support from the other end, Bumrah was overused by Rohit Sharma and himself. This led to that injury. BCCI realises what an asset Bumrah is and isn’t willing to take any risk.

“You can’t overuse a champion bowler like Bumrah. He will be available for big matches, and there is not much to worry about,” the board official added.
