BCCI Apex Council meeting on July 7, D-Day for Media Rights

BCCI Apex Council meeting will be held on July 7 with some key decisions to be made on the BCCI Media Rights

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hold an important Apex Council Meeting on July 7. Among a number of key decisions include the distribution of the BCCI media rights for the 2023-28 cycle. India is currently without a broadcaster for their home games after the agreement with Disney Star lapsed in March. The Duleep Trophy thus remains unavailable for fans.

“The tender will be coming out soon. We’re planning to close the media rights process by August end,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said on Wednesday.

For ₹6,138.1 crore, Disney Star acquired the BCCI rights (2018–23), more than double the BCCI’s prior profits from international cricket. As per the last IPL Media Rights valuation, one IPL match is valued at Rs 118 Cr. BCCI wants more than that for India Cricket Team matches. However, Indian broadcasters are not “interested” in splashing out so much per game with diminishing viewership of ODIs and Tests.

BCCI Media Rights: All you need to know

  • BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the sale of media rights will begin in July.
  • The tender will be floated sometime in July with the entire process set to take 45 days to complete.
  • After the success of selling IPL Media Rights, BCCI will separate TV and digital rights.
  • With India set to host 20 Tests, 21 ODIs and 31 T20s in the next four years, the expectation is to score over Rs 12,000 Crore.
  • The valuation will put a per-match value more than an IPL match which stands at 118 Cr.
  • However, during its first market assessment, BCCI had a setback. Broadcasters were not ready to pay per-match value equal to IPL.
  • The last deal was for 5 years. BCCI has sold IPL rights for a 5-year period. BCCI is likely to continue with the 5-year option.

As per Hindustan Times, It’s unclear if BCCI intends to hold another round of the online auction. According to market sources, the Indian cricket board is considering the possibility of returning to closed bidding in order to achieve actual value extraction as the bilateral cricket market is in decline.

Despite ending their contract in March, Disney Star is expected to be at the forefront for the BCCI Media Rights. Viacom18 has emerged as a big player in the market with the IPL 2023 LIVE streaming on JioCinema. The Sony-Zee merger also makes them contenders for the tender.

A tender is likely to be released post the BCCI Apex Council Meeting on July 7. The entire process, online or closed bidding, should be completed in 30-45 days. Hence, India vs Australia ODI series in September is likely to be the first tournament where the new rights holder comes in.
