BCCI announces rule change after ‘bail controversy’ in WPL 2025

There are three to four run outs that weren't given by the third umpire, which caused a major controversy.

After a massive controversy over the run out, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified why the third umpire in question, Gayathri Venugopalan, didn’t rule in favour of the Mumbai Indians (MI) Women against the Delhi Capitals (DC) Women and has also announced a change of rule for the remaining Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 season.

BCCI changes WPL rules after controversy

According to ESPNcricinfo, the batch of LED bails that are being used in the WPL are faulty. Any movement sees them light up, even when both spigots have not come off. The BCCI has notified the five franchises that bails will be deemed as broken not when the LED lights go off but when the bails are fully dislodged.

This ruling goes against WPL’s pre-exiting rules. “Where LED wickets are used, the moment at which the wicket has been put down shall be deemed to be the first frame in which the LED lights are illuminated and subsequent frames show the bail permanently removed from the top of the stumps,” the current rule states.

For the unaware, there were a few controversial decisions taken by the third umpire in the DC vs MI women’s match. The side that ended up losing, Mumbai Indians, wasn’t happy with the decision. Fans and several experts criticised the decision online as well. The run outs seemed apparent and should have been given out as the bails lighted up. However, none of them were given out.

Now, we know why the third umpire took the decision. The faulty bails forced a change. Until the bails were dislodged, the umpire couldn’t give it out. The outcome did effect Mumbai Indians and aided the Delhi Capitals, but there is nothing the umpire could do.
