Punjab Kings (PBKS) all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai has suffered a personal loss following the passing of his mother. The news was confirmed by his Afghanistan teammates Mohammad Nabi and Karim Janat, who shared messages of condolence and support on social media.
Omarzai, 26, is currently part of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) squad in IPL 2026, although he has not featured in a game so far this season. The franchise has not yet released an official statement regarding his availability for their upcoming match against Rajasthan Royals.
Karim Janat expressed his condolences, saying, “We are saddened by the death of the mother of national player Azmatullah Omarzai. May Allah Almighty grant the deceased Paradise and give patience to the family. We share with them in these moments of great grief.”
Mohammad Nabi also shared a message of support, adding, “I am deeply saddened to hear that the respected mother of Nawab Khan Umarzai and our national team player Azmatullah Omarzai has passed away. May Allah Almighty grant her soul the highest place in Jannah and bless the entire family with patience and strength.”
Availability for RR clash remains uncertain
Punjab Kings are set to face Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday, April 28, in Mullanpur. As things stand, there is no clarity on whether Omarzai will be available for selection.
Given the situation, his participation is likely to depend entirely on personal considerations, with the team expected to give him space during this period. Punjab Kings have been in strong form this season, sitting at the top of the table with six wins from seven matches. They have a settled core and, in fact remains the only team to be unchanged in IPL 2026 so far.
Omarzai’s role and IPL journey so far
Omarzai has been seen as an exciting all-round option, capable of contributing with both bat and ball. In his IPL career so far:

He made his IPL debut with Gujarat Titans (GT) in 2024, playing seven matches in his first season. Despite not playing yet this season, he remains part of PBKS’ squad plans as a backup all-rounder. He can anytime slot in place of Marcus Stoinis, who hasn’t done much.
