The series will be used as preparation ahead of the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Cricket Australia was planning for the series to take place following their tour of the West Indies. It will be the first bilateral T20I series between the two teams, and Australia’s first tour of Bangladesh since 2017.

Although initially Australia were scheduled to play three T20I matches, the BCB asked Cricket Australia to play five T20Is instead of three. Both cricket boards agreed to play five T20Is in August. Mahmudullah’s Bangladesh are in coal-hot form after drubbing Zimbabwe in their just-concluded tour. The Tigers not just won but dominated ferociously over Zimbabwe overseas winning the one-off Test, ODI series 3-0, and clinched the T20I series 2-1. However, they will miss the services of their skipper Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das, both of whom have been ruled out due to injuries.
