Cameron Green makes shocking revelation, opens up about incurable kidney disease

Chronic kidney disease has been a part of Green's life since birth, affecting the filtering function of his kidneys.

Australian cricket sensation Cameron Green has opened up about his life-long battle with chronic kidney disease, revealing that he was diagnosed at birth and given a grim prognosis that he might not live past the age of 12. Now, at 24, Green shares his inspiring journey of thriving against the odds to become a pivotal member of the Australian cricket team across all formats.

Chronic kidney disease has been a part of Green’s life since birth, affecting the filtering function of his kidneys. In an interview with Channel 7, Green disclosed that his kidneys currently operate at around 60%, placing him at stage two of the progressive disease.

While chronic kidney disease has five stages, with stage five involving transplant or dialysis, Cameron Green considers himself fortunate to be at stage two, emphasizing the irreversible nature of the condition.

“Kidneys can’t get better. It’s irreversible. So any way you can find to slow the progression, you basically try and do,” Cameron Green explained.

Cameron Green physically unaffected!

Despite the challenges, Cameron Green remains physically unaffected, a stroke of luck considering the initial shock his parents faced when doctors identified kidney issues during an ultrasound while his mother was pregnant.

“At the time it was uncharted territory as such; the prognosis wasn’t great. There were life-expectancy issues that he might not expect to live past 12 years of age,” shared Gary, Green’s father.

Cameron Green, however, has kept his medical condition largely private throughout his cricket career. Instances of cramping during matches were the only visible signs linked to the kidney problem. Reflecting on a game in Cairns in September 2022, Green realized the connection between his kidney function and cramping.

Now, the cricket star has decided to share his journey publicly, hoping that his story will provide support and inspiration to others facing similar challenges. Cameron Green has already informed his Australian teammates, coaching staff, and select members of the cricket community about his condition.

Cameron Green’s revelation stands as a testament to his resilience and determination to thrive against the odds, offering inspiration to those dealing with chronic illnesses and emphasizing the importance of raising awareness for such conditions.
