Steve Smith’s wonder 94 besides half-centuries from Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh have helped Australia post 280/8. Although at a time it looked Australia would cruise to a 320+ total, England bowlers fought back at the death with quick wickets to restrict Australia to 280/8. Adil Rashid was excellent once again with 3/57. Chris Woakes and David Willey bagged two wickets each.

Chasing a target of 281, England struggled from the onset. Mitchell Starc delivered a fiery first over, cleaning up struggling Jason Roy and Dawid Malan. While James Vince and Phil Salt repaired the early damage with a 34-run stand, Jos Hazlewood struck to remove Salt.

But England fought back from then. James Vince and Sam Billings stitched together a 122-run stand for the 4th wicket to steady the ship. Vince smashed 72-ball 60 while Billings scored a well-made 80-ball 71. However, that is where England’s resistance ended.

With no Jos Buttler or Liam Livingstone to take charge in the middle, England crumbled. From 156/4, England were suddenly 169/7. Starc and Zampa did most of the damage to the lower order. Stand-in captain Moeen Ali seemed to take charge of England’s attack. But he fell to a Zampa trap. Then on, it was just a formality. In the end, England folded for 208.

Earlier, opting to bat, David Warner and Travis Head gave Australia a decent start. But it did not last long. Moeen Ali and Chirs Woakes dismissed Warner and Head to bring England back in the game. However, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne had other ideas. The two added 101 runs for the third wicket to keep England’s bowlers at bay.

While Adil Rashid dismissed Labuschagne and Alex Carey to fight back for England, Smith continued with Mitchell Marsh. The two added 90 runs for the 5th wicket. But Smith missed a well-deserved century as he fell to Adil Rashid. Despite a good 50-run knock from Mitchell Marsh, some tight bowling helped England restrict Australia to 280/8.
