Ashes 2021-22: Alastair Cook suggests technical changes for Rory Burns to play longer for England

After registering scores of 0 and 13 in the first Test in Brisbane, the 31-year-old was hunted down for four by Mitchell Starc for the second time in the series. Burns have played 30 Test matches so far, scoring three hundreds and 11 fifties from them. Burns’ average has dipped to 31.36 because of his dip in form and former England believes that the southpaw will have to make adjustments to his technique to stretch his Test career.

Cook, the only England batsman to score over 10000 Test runs, reckoned that a hundred in the second innings can help the Surrey-born secure his place in few more games for the Three Lions.

“You’re always told in international cricket to do what you’ve done in the county game, don’t change the way you play,” Cook told BT.

“But it’s probably getting to the stage now where he’ll have to sit down and go ‘this is what I’ve got with my technique, if I want to play longer for England, to play 60, 70 or 80 Tests, what do I need to improve?

“This does work for Rory Burns on occasion but to be more consistent early on in his innings I think he really needs to think about how he gets that bat coming down straighter. It’s still in his hands. He will bat again in this match unless something extraordinary happens and if he gets a hundred he will play in some more games,” Cook added.

Zak Crawley, 23, has been waiting for his turn patiently and another failure for Burns can see the former feature in the Boxing Day test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from December 26.
