‘Anything to watch the match’ Yashasvi Jaiswal opens about watching cricket matches at Mumbai’s Press Club

Yashasvi Jaiswal opens about playing Test cricket for India ahead of West Indies tour

Yashasvi Jaiswal: IND vs WI – Yashasvi Jaiswal is currently enjoying his best phase in cricket. After plundering over 600 runs in IPL 2023 season, Jaiswal is ready to take Test cricket by storm. The southpaw who has been selected in the Test squad for the West Indies tour is hungry to score runs and opens up about playing the longest format – his favorite one. However, there were days when the southpaw could do anything to just watch the screening of match with his roommate at Mumbai’s Press Club

During his teenage days, when Jaiswal had no money, he found different ways just to watch cricket matches by climbing on trees, going cycling with his roommate, and much more. The opening batter also imagined playing at Mumbai’s iconic stadium in Wankhede, before fulfilling his dream of scoring IPL hundred in this year’s IPL 2023 season.

“Anything to watch the match! At night, my roommate and I would try and watch the games. It was really a fun time for both of us. Now that I play, I put all my efforts into playing. I could also see the Wankhede floodlights. And I would always wish that God willing, I would play there one day.

That thought was always there. When I actually played there and especially when I scored a century there, those memories of my childhood came back to me. It motivated me to do even better,” Jaiswal said to Indian Express.

Yashavi Jaiswal: Jaiswal opens up about playing Test cricket, says it makes him strong mentally

Unlike other young players, Jaiswal likes playing red-ball cricket and says it helps improves his mental toughness as each day in Test cricket throws different challenges. The Southpaw also said, “Playing the longer format helps me improve my mental toughness, which is really important because you are going to be tested in different situations against different bowlers. It’s a lot of fun,” Jaiswal added.

The RR opener also said, that he likes to build on the innings and never shies away from playing shots irrespective of the formats. “Overall, I try to focus more on cricketing shots. It doesn’t matter which format I’m playing. What matters is which shot I’m playing and how I’m playing it. The only thing on my mind is how I’m building my innings.”

I didn’t think that far ahead whether I would play at Wankhede (laughs). I just kept on working, knowing that one day I would reach there.
