Amid Mitchell Starc’s mind boggling IPL 2024 auction bid, ex-Aussie lays out ‘threat to Test’ factor

The former Australian cricketer wanted the youngsters to follow the footsteps of Mitchell Starc after his IPL 2024 auction success

It has been less than a day since Mitchell Starc became the highest paid cricketer in IPL history and the craze around it carries on unabated. Amid all the frenzy around IPL and T20 cricket, a former Australian captain pointed out the importance of the ‘Test’ factor and how it disciplined Starc’s studded career.

Ex-Aussie’s ‘threat to Test’ warning after Starc’s IPL bid

As per 9News, Mark Taylor claimed that there was an ‘ongoing threat to Test cricket’ amid the emergence of different leagues. He noted that maintaining and prioritizing Test cricket was going to get harder. Taylor advocated the young Australian cricketers to follow Starc’s footsteps in solidifying his postion as a Test cricketer while keeping the IPL second on his priority.

I hope the players follow in that Mitchell Starc mold. Work on getting your baggy green, work on becoming a great Test cricketer, knowing full well the IPL will always be there”, Mark Taylor said.

“I think Australia have got it right but that pressure is going to be even greater in years to come – there’s already talks about a second IPL, there’s Dubai leagues, there’s American leagues popping up everywhere. There’s an ongoing threat to Test cricket, getting that balance right and maintaining and prioritizing Test cricket is going to get tougher.”

Starc’s moment of history IPL 2024 auction

After an intense bidding war with Gujarat Titans, Kolkata Knight Riders succeeded in acquiring Starc for the highest-ever bid made so far.

Starc is no stranger to IPL, having played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders previously. The fast bowler has played 27 matches in IPL till now, taking 34 wickets. It is his economy rate of just over seven that attracted interest towards him.
