Amazon bags broadcast rights in Australia for ICC events

Amazon also announced the third season of the Test documentary which would be released in 2024.

Amazon Prime Video has secured the rights to broadcast all ICC events in Australia for the next four years, starting from the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup in USA. The deal includes Men’s and Women’s Cricket World Cups, T20 World Cups, Champions Trophy, U19s and the World Test Championship Final. The deal also includes all ICC Qualifier and U19 World Cup events.

The new partnership means there will be no free-to-air coverage of global events in Australia.

This is the first time that Amazon Prime Video has acquired the rights to cricket in Australia, and the second time that it has ventured into the sport globally, after streaming New Zealand Cricket matches in India.

The move is seen as a challenge to the traditional broadcasters of cricket in Australia, such as Fox Sports and Seven Network, who have been facing financial difficulties and legal disputes over cricket broadcast rights.

ICC events to air on Amazon from 2024-2027

  • Men’s T20 World Cup: USA/West Indies (June 2024)
  • Women’s T20 World Cup: Bangladesh (September 2024)
  • Men’s Champions Trophy: Pakistan (February 2025)
  • World Test Championship final: England (June 2025)
  • Women’s ODI World Cup: India (September 2025)
  • Men’s T20 World Cup: India/Sri Lanka (September 2026)
  • Women’s T20 World Cup: England (June 2026)
  • Women’s Champions Trophy: Sri Lanka (February 2027)
  • Men’s ODI World Cup: South Africa/Namibia (October 2027)

Amazon Prime head for Australia and New Zealand, Hushidar Kharas, said that the deal is a milestone for the streaming service and that it would offer unprecedented access to cricket fans in Australia.

“The Cricket World Cup is one of the most viewed sporting events in the world; the recently concluded edition was watched by hundreds of millions of people! Over the next four years, Prime members in Australia will be able to watch their favourite cricket teams and players compete for the game’s biggest prize, on demand, on the device of their choice—exclusively on Prime Video”, Kharas said.

Meanwhile, Amazon also announced the third season of the Test documentary which would be released in 2024. The Test: A New Era for Australia’s Team is a series produced by Amazon Prime Video and co-produced by Cricket Australia.

The third season will be around this year’s Ashes series in England which ended 2-2.
