After missing team bus, George Linde fails to “miss” flooring Rizwan’s Pakistan

George Linde's all-round brilliance, featuring a fiery 48 and career-best 4/21, powered South Africa to an 11-run victory against Pakistan in Durban.

George Linde marked his return to South Africa’s national cricket team in style, leading the Proteas to an 11-run victory over Pakistan in the first T20 International at Kingsmead, Durban. Despite a rocky start to his day, which included missing the team bus and needing a police escort to the ground, Linde delivered a stellar all-round performance during PAK vs SA 1st T20I.

A game-changing knock

With South Africa struggling at 28/3, Linde reignited their innings with a crucial 48 off just 24 balls. His late blitz helped the Proteas post an impressive total of 183/9 in 20 overs. Partnering with teenage pacer Kwena Maphaka, Linde added important runs, smashing three sixes in the final over.

Career-best bowling performance

Linde was equally impactful with the ball. His left-arm spin proved too much for Pakistan’s middle and lower order, as he took career-best figures of 4/21. A pivotal 18th over saw him claim three wickets, turning the match firmly in South Africa’s favour.

The Proteas faced early setbacks, losing wickets quickly and finding themselves at 10/2. However, veteran batter David Miller stepped up, scoring a blistering 82 off 40 balls, including eight sixes. His partnerships with Heinrich Klaasen, Donovan Ferreira, and Linde laid the foundation for a competitive total.

Maphaka makes his mark

Teenager Kwena Maphaka impressed on debut, clocking speeds of nearly 152 km/h and dismissing Pakistan captain Babar Azam early. The young pacer showcased nerves of steel in the final over, successfully defending 19 runs and taking the crucial wicket of Mohammad Rizwan, who scored 72 off 62 balls.

Linde reflects on his comeback

After the match, Linde expressed his joy at his successful return. “It was the perfect comeback. I felt calm and focused, despite missing the bus earlier,” he joked. “I just wanted to deliver for the team, and I’m glad I could contribute both with bat and ball.”

With this win, South Africa leads the series 1-0. The next matches are scheduled for Friday at SuperSport Park and Sunday at the Wanderers, where the Proteas will aim to secure the series victory. George Linde’s comeback has not only boosted his confidence but also given South Africa a much-needed edge in the T20 series. Fans will be eager to see if he continues his match-winning form.
