After Alyssa Healy another blow for UP Warriorz, Chamari Athapaththu to leave WPL early

In contrast to Chamari Athapaththu, New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr has chosen to prioritize the WPL over the upcoming bilateral series.

WPL 2025: UP Warriorz are in a spot of bother. With their permanent skipper Alyssa Healy, already missing, Chamari Athapaththu is also set to leave the Women’s Premier League early. The Sri Lankan veteran will join her national side facing the New Zealand Women from March 4 onwards. With Chamari Athapaththu leaving early from WPL, the UP Warrriorz have a lot of thinking to do regarding their squad composition.

Chamari Athapaththu to play 4 more WPL matches

Chamari Athapaththu will remain available for the UP Warriorz until February 26, enabling her to participate in four more matches before focusing on her national team duties. Following their game against the Mumbai Indians on February 26, the UP Warriorz will head to Lucknow for the tournament’s final league phase, where they will play three home matches.

Chamari Athapaththu has been appointed captain of Sri Lanka’s 16-member squad for their upcoming tour of New Zealand. The team is set to depart on February 22 for a series consisting of three ODIs and three T20Is. Her leadership role underscores her significance to the national team and the necessity of her early exit from the WPL.

Unlike Athapaththu, Amelia Kerr to stay in WPL

In contrast to Chamari Athapaththu, New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr has chosen to prioritize the WPL over the upcoming bilateral series. Should the Mumbai Indians progress to the knockouts and reach the final on March 15, Kerr will miss the first two T20Is on March 14 and 16 in Christchurch. This decision mirrors her move last year when she opted to skip a home bilateral T20I series against England to participate in the entire WPL.
