BCCI diktat to play Ranji Trophy might not be for Ishan Kishan after all: Report

Ishan Kishan has played two Tests, 27 ODIs, and 32 T20I for India, having made his debut in 2021.

Ever since India wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan opted for a break, all sorts of controversies have erupted surrounding his attitude towards domestic cricket, and comeback to the national team. When recently, BCCI secretary Jay Shah spoke about making Ranji Trophy mandatory for players, it was perceived, that the statement was made for Ishan.

But now as it turns out, as per a report in the Indian Express, the jibe wasn’t directed towards the 25-year-old. “Ishan has always given priority to the Ranji Trophy.

“In the 2022-23 season, he was constantly travelling with the Indian cricket team but despite the hectic schedule he played a couple of Ranji Trophy games, and scored a century against Kerala, which helped him earn a place in India’s Test team. All these accusations are just rubbish,” a source in the know told Indian Express.

Comeback Soon?

The report further suggests that he might play in the DY Patil T20 tournament, and will be looking to make it to the Indian team for the T20 World Cup.

“He will ask for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the board. He will be playing for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He wants to earn his spot in India’s T20 World Cup squad with a good outing in the IPL. It is a long road but the hunger to play cricket is back and he wants to play in all three formats,” said a source.

What Went Wrong for Ishan Kishan

If the sources are to be believed, the World Cup 2023 final loss had a deep impact on him, and he continued to plat after that as well. But it did take a toll on him eventually.

“He had never complained about it but the ODI World Cup final loss in Ahmedabad, like the billions in our country, has left him shattered. He wanted the break right after the tournament but was asked by the management to play and he did it without asking any questions.

“He tried to push his body and brain but mental fatigue caught up with him and it was only then that he requested a break,” the source said.
