Afghanistan are all but out of the T20 World Cup 2026 after losses to New Zealand and South Africa.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 hasn’t boded well for Afghanistan so far. Afghanistan’s T20 World Cup campaign has already tested their nerves on the field. Now, it has shaken them off it as well.

Just days after that breathless, draining contest against South Africa, a match that stretched into two Super Overs and left players physically and emotionally spent, Afghanistan’s performance analyst KC Rama Subramanian suffered a mild heart attack in New Delhi.

As per Mumbai Mirror, Subramanian experienced chest pain on Wednesday and was rushed to Fortis Hospital in the capital. He underwent angioplasty and is currently out of danger.

“Yes, the Afghanistan team’s performance analyst experienced chest pain yesterday. He had suffered a mild heart attack and was taken to Fortis hospital. He underwent angioplasty and is out of danger and doing better now,” the source told the newspaper.

Subramanian, who is based in Chennai, is a well-regarded figure inside the Afghanistan camp and also serves as director of Sportalytics Private Limited.

Afghanistan suffer Super Over heartbreak

The unwanted development has come after a dramatic game, perhaps the greatest T20 game ever. Afghanistan had just come off one of the most incredible games in T20 history. Against South Africa, they fought through 40 overs, then one Super Over, and then another. Margins were microscopic. Emotions were not. In the end, they fell short, but not without leaving everything on the field, with a special thanks to Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

Before that, they had already suffered a five-wicket loss to New Zealand in Chennai. Two defeats to start the tournament have put them under pressure in Group D. Consider Afghanistan out of the tournament. They play their second-last group game against the UAE on February 16 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
