Abhishek Sharma > Yashasvi Jaiswal? Yograj Singh reckons Punjab opener could’ve been in Champions Trophy squad

Yograj Singh opined that Abhishek Sharma should have been included in India's squad for Champions Trophy 2025

Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh opined that Abhishek Sharma could have been included in India’s squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2025. His remarks come a day after the 15-member squad was announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and skipper Rohit Sharma. Sharma, who made his T20I debut in 2024, is yet to play an ODI for India, similar to Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, the latter has been rewarded for his performances across formats with a maiden ODI call-up.

Yograj Singh wants Abhishek Sharma in CT 2025 squad

Speaking to IANS, Yograj claimed that Abhishek was going to become a big player in the future while batting for his inclusion in India’s Champions Trophy squad. He said that the experience would have been a great opportunity for the youngster to learn. He further lauded the team management for their decisions in picking the squad, adding that players who were going through a rough patch must be supported.

This is the correct way of going about things, we should back and support players who are going through a rough patch. I will say that Abhishek Sharma should have also been in the team as he is going to be a big player in the future and this is a great opportunity for him to learn,” Yograj Singh said.

Jaiswal has been rewarded for his performances across formats by being included in India’s CT 2025 squad. He is expected to play the role of a back-up opener to Rohit Sharma or Shubman Gill should either one miss out on a game. However, it remains to be seen if India will want to experiment with the left-right hand opening combination with Jaiswal partnering with Rohit. If that is the case, then Gill will either be out of the XI or will have to move down the order. But that is unlikely as the Punjab batter is a certain in the playing XI, given that he has been named the vice-captain.
