Abhishek Sharma receives Test backing from Harbhajan, compared with Sehwag & Travis Head

Abhishek Sharma doesn't have a flattering first-class record despite playing for Punjab since 2017.

Abhishek Sharma’s 135-run knock is having a seismic impact. Not only is the southpaw getting shouts for a permanent spot on India’s team sheet for the T20 World Cup 2026 but is also getting an ODI debut. Of course, that can only happen after the ICC Champions Trophy but still people want him to get a chance in the other white-ball format.

Abhishek Sharma should play Tests for India, Harbhajan

But Harbhajan Singh has taken the discussions to another level. He reckons that Abhishek Sharma is good enough for Test cricket. The former Indian spinner cited that the opener smashes the ball well in first-class cricket as well and has even led the Punjab team back in 2022.

“And maybe we will also see him starring in the Test team as well. He can play, banda todta hai usme bhi (he smashes the red ball as well). He is (was) the captain of Punjab,” Harbhajan said.

Is Abhishek Sharma of the same mould as Sehwag?

The off-spinner went on to say that Abhishek came to have the same impact that Travis Head has. We all say how he changed the course of two matches in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Similar to what Virender Sehwag did for India in the 2000s and what Sir Viv Richards did for the West Indies back in the 1970s and 1980s.

“On his day, he just takes the game away. Travis Head does it, Virender Sehwag used to do it, and Viv Richards used to do it. These kinds of players are the ones who take the game forward. Today or tomorrow, his chance will come in Test cricket. You always need a player of the Sehwag mould in Test cricket who comes, smashes, and takes the game away. That can be Abhishek Sharma,” Harbhajan added.
