3 teams that would have suited Rohit Sharma if he was not retained by MI for IPL 2025

Rohit Sharma is set to play for Mumbai Indians again, but if the former skipper had not been retained by MI for IPL 2025, which teams would have suited him?

Rohit Sharma, who is once again set to wear the Mumbai Indians jersey for IPL 2025, was the subject of much speculation before the retention process. There were rumours about Sharma leaving the team, especially after the Mumbai Indians replaced him and made Hardik Pandya the captain. Under Pandya, the team finished at the bottom of the table last IPL. There were also rumours of a rift between Hardik and Rohit. However, all doubts were cleared on October 31st when MI announced the retention of five players for IPL 2025, including Rohit Sharma. Fans breathed a sigh of relief when they saw his name among the retained players.

But have you ever wondered what would have happened if he hadn’t been retained by MI? Which teams would have suited him in that case? Many teams released big names before the auction, and now the retention process is over, and so is the auction. But if Rohit hadn’t been retained, he would have had to go through the auction. It would depend on which team would have gone for him, but take a look at three teams that would have been a perfect fit for him.

Teams that would have suited Rohit Sharma if he was not retained by MI

PBKS

If we assume that Rohit Sharma had not been retained, we would also need to consider that Punjab Kings released many players during their retention process, retaining only two. This means that if MI hadn’t kept Rohit, PBKS would have likely gone after him. Every team wants a player like Rohit Sharma, who can lead from the front and give the team a positive start. Though Rohit may not be at his peak, his batting remains valuable. Had he not been retained by MI, PBKS would have likely made him captain, if they had been able to acquire him. However, they now have Shreyas Iyer leading the team for IPL 2025

KKR

It’s hard to part with a captain who helped the team win the IPL, but KKR took the bold step of releasing Shreyas Iyer. Considering their situation at the IPL auction, KKR would have surely gone for Rohit Sharma, as they needed someone who could bat at the top and lead. Rohit has fond memories of Eden Gardens and would have thrived on that pitch. If KKR had secured him, their captaincy issue would have been resolved as well.

DC

Now, coming to Delhi Capitals, who ultimately went for some big names at the auction, including KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis, both of whom are captains. When it comes to retaining players, Axar Patel could be their leader for IPL 2025. However, if we assume that Rohit Sharma hadn’t been retained by MI, Delhi Capitals could have been the perfect team for him. They had released Rishabh Pant before the auction and were looking for a batter and a leader. Delhi’s ground is comparatively smaller, which would have been beneficial for Rohit, allowing him to use the conditions to his advantage. Therefore, DC could have been a strong contender to bring him into their lineup if MI hadn’t retained him ahead of IPL 2025.
