ICC laid down the qualification scenario for the mega event. According to the newly-formulated rules, a total of 20 teams will take part in the event, of which 12 teams will get a direct entry into the competition.

Among those 12 will be the top 8 teams of the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup which will be held in Australia later this year. Like what we see in the FIFA World Cup, hosts West Indies and USA will be a direct entry, while the other two slots will be filled up by the next highest-ranked teams in the ICC Men’s T20I team rankings as of November 14 of this year.

However, another aspect has to be taken into consideration. If West Indies are among the top eight teams in the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup, the slot reserved for them for being the hosts will then go to the third highest-ranked team in the rankings who did qualify by automatic means.
2024 ICC T20 World Cup Breakdown:
- 20 teams to take part in the mega event.
- 12 teams will get a direct entry in the competition.
- Top 8 teams of the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup will be among those 12 direct entrants.
- West Indies and USA will also get a direct entry for being hosts.
- The remaining two slots will be occupied by the next highest-ranked teams in the ICC Men’s T20I team rankings as of November 14.
- In case West Indies is among the top 8 teams of the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup, the slot reserved for them for being the hosts will then go to the next highest-ranked team in the rankings who did qualify by automatic means.
