Before the tournament started, he was ranked 152 and participated in it via a protected ranking. He pulled of one of the biggest upsets of this tournament as he defeated Rafael Nadal in three sets in the second round. He went on to defeat Roberto Bautista Agut, seventh seed Felix Auger Aliassime and ninth seed Cameron Norrie all in straight sets to set up clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas.
In the final, Tsitsipas began on a positive note as he broke Coric’s first serve to take 2-0 lead in the contest. He then raced into a 4-1 lead. Coric slowly clawed his way back into the contest and broke Tsitsipas once to level the contest 4-4. He soon began to find momentum which was aided by untimely errors from Stefanos Tsitsipas. The contest soon moved into the tie-breaker and Coric dominated in the tie breaker to win the first set.
His good run continued in the next set as well as he was finding immaculate rhythm with his shots and was accurate in his placements. He broke Tsitsipas in the sixth game to take 4-2 lead in the contest and soon won the next two games to win the title. With the victory he has now entered the top-30 in the World rankings and finds himself on the 29th spot. With US Open around the corner, the 25-year old is also a dark horse at Flushing Meadows.
