The round 13 match of World Chess Championship 2024 between D Gukesh and Ding Liren ended in a draw after five hours

The 13th round match between Grandmaster D Gukesh and Ding Liren ended in a draw, with scores tied at 6.5 and 6.5. The match lasted for five hours and ultimately ended in a tie. Ding Liren managed to draw the game after 68 moves. The duo will now clash in Round 14 on Thursday and the winner of the round will be crowed the World Chess Championship winner.

It’s fitting that the match goes to the last game, because we’ve both showed a lot of fighting spirit and played some very entertaining chess,” D Gukesh said in the post-Game 13 press conference.

  1. Round 1: Liren started his title defence with a strong performance, defeating Gukesh with black pieces in the opening round.
  2. Round 2: Gukesh and Ding played a lacklustre draw in the second round.
  3. Round 3: Gukesh bounced back, securing a win with white pieces to level the score.
  4. Rounds 4, 5, 6: The next three rounds ended in draws, with both players adopting a cautious approach.

  7. Rounds 9, 10: Like the last rounds, the rounds ended in draws in 54 and 36 moves respectively.
  8. Round 11: Gukesh sealed a stunning win in just 29 moves. Liren had no answer to the Indian star and resigned.
