In a poor display of tennis, India’s no. 1 singles tennis player Sumit Nagal exited from the Australian Open in the first round itself, on Sunday, after he lost to Czech Thomas Machac 3-6, 1-6, 5-7. The World no. 96 Nagal was no match to his 26th seeded opponent, when there were a few expectations from the man from Jhajjar.
Sumit Nagal Loses Again
The first two sets were rather one-sided where Sumit Nagal failed to get going. But in the third set, the Indian showed signs of improvement. At one point, he was leading 4-1 in the set, but somehow found a way to squander the initiative and lose it 5-7. But having said that, Nagal will take home a staggering prize money of INR 69,86,892 after making it to the main draw of the Australian Open.
Indians Still in Fray
Had he won here, he would have gotten richer by INR 10,586,200. But then, coming back to his match, he looked off colour for sure. In the Auckland Open 250 also, after making it to the main draw, he lost in the first round against American Alex Michelsen in straight sets.

While the singles campaign might have come to an end for India, there is a lot to look forward to in the men’s doubles section. Rithvik Bollipalli, who would play with American Ryan Seggerman. Then there is N Sriram Balaji with Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela, Albano Olivetti/Yuki Bhambri, Rohan Bopanna and new partner Nicolas Barrientos in the fray.
