India to make bid to host World Chess Championship after D Gukesh’s historic FIDE Candidates win

D Gukesh made history when he became the youngest person to win the coveted Candidates and secured his spot to compete for the World Championships title

Following D Gukesh’s historic win at the Candidates, the All India Chess Federation will make a big to get the hosting rights for the World Chess Championship. The match will see grandmaster Gukesh take on defending champion Ding Liren. AICF’s newly elected secretary Dev Patel confirmed the body’s intentions to gain the hosting rights for the match on Thursday.

India to host World Chess Championship?

The championship is slated for the last quarter of the year, specific dates and venue are yet to be finalized.

We are open to discussions with FIDE, the apex chess body, and we are certain that the best world championship will be held in India,” Dev Patel told PTI.

After a thrilling 14-round Candidates tournament in Toronto, Canada, the teenage Indian emerged as the lone leader.

Gukesh became only the second Indian to qualify for the World Championship title after Vishwanathan Anand.
