The much-awaited Hockey India League (HIL) is set to make its comeback in December 2024, after a seven-year break. The league, which was last held in 2017, is set to return with a bigger format. This time, eight men’s teams and six women’s teams will compete in the prestigious tournament, with matches set to be held at two venues, Rourkela and Ranchi. Hokcye India President Dileep Tikey announced in a press conference on Friday. This is the first time the Women’s Hockey India League is introduced.

Men’s and Women’s Leagues to run side by side

The 2024 edition of the HIL will see both men’s and women’s leagues running simultaneously, a first in the history of the competition. This decision reflects Indian hockey’s progressive steps towards gender equality in sports, offering an equal platform for both male and female athletes.

FIH President Dilip Kumar Tirkey expressed his excitement about the league’s return, saying, “The Hockey India League returns after seven long years, bigger and better, with eight men’s teams and six women’s teams ready to showcase their talent. This isn’t just a league; it’s a platform where dreams take flight and the future of Indian hockey is shaped. The inclusion of men’s and women’s leagues side by side is a testament to our commitment to providing equal opportunities to all players.”

When will Hockey India League auction take place?

The players’ auction for the HIL 2024-25 is set to take place from October 13 to 15 in New Delhi. Each franchise will assemble a squad of 24 players, comprising at least 16 Indian players (including a mandatory four junior players) and eight international stars.
